Did you know that Congregation Albert has the oldest established Jewish cemetery in Albuquerque?

After the Temple was founded in 1897, 50 families acquired two and a half acres of cemetery land from the B’nai B’rith Lodge No. 336. This cemetery is now a section of Fairview Memorial Park on Yale Boulevard in the Southeast Heights.

B’nai B’rith first founded the cemetery in 1889 according to Temple records, or 1892 if you believe the historical plaque at the gate. The original B’nai B’rith entry gate still stands at the western edge of the Congregation Albert Cemetery.

Members of the founding families of the Temple rest here. The headstone of Albert Grunsfeld (October 15, 1836 – November 30, 1893), Congregation Albert’s namesake, is the tallest memorial in the oldest part of the Cemetery. There, the dates on many headstones range from the 1800s and to the early 1900s.
